| Hollywood Is Rocked by Top Runway Jewelry Artists
February 03, 2004 - Los Angeles, CA
Hollywood was really rocking last week at the "Swarovski Rocks" fashion show at the hip Avalon Hotel.
Swarovski, the 100-year-old company who makes the cut crystals adored by stars, celebs, and royalty, showed off the creative crystal talents of the unsung heroes of the fashion world, the jewelry designers who create the mad and magical jewelry worn on the catwalks of international fashion designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen, and John Galliano.
"Catwalk jewels are designed for pure adornment and theatrical high drama," explains Nadja Swarovski. "Jewels tell a story, add depth, myth, magic, and fantasy. We wanted to debut Runway Rocks in L. A. because of the city's rich heritage in fashion and film, and its appreciation for jewelry, art, drama, costume design, and glamour."
The Swarovski Rocks show benefited the Costume Council of LACMA and will tour the U. S. for several months. It's already been displayed at the Musee des Arts Decoratif in Paris, France, and at the Sketch Gallery in London, England.
Needless to say there wasn't much to actually wear walking the runways. But that was just fine with the 600 avid Swarovski admirers, including Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, Jacqueline Obradors ("NYPD Blue"), Jane Seymour, Sharon Lawrence, Ming-Na Zee ("ER"), Vanessa Lengies ("American Dreams"), Constance Zimmer ("Good Morning Miami"), Julie Benz, Courtney Peldon ("Boston Public"), Rosa Blassi from "Strong Medicine," and jewelry designer Trina Tarantino.
The cutting-edge artists represented included Slim Barrett, Erickson Beamon, Erik Halley, Shaun Leane, Gurmit, and Johnny Rocket. Two pieces made a world debut; a Boudicca pearl neck brace simply perfect, dahling, for your next nasty case of BMW whiplash, and a crowd-pleasing Water Rodrigues dress, an ethereal mix of crystal chains and satin stripes.
Some of the couture gowns that served as canvas for the gems were designed by Elisabetta Rogiani, an Italian-born couturier with a boutique on Beverly Boulevard. And those gowns were definitely red carpet material. We wouldn't be one bit surprised if one or two of her glam gowns showed up at the Independent Spirit Awards in a few weeks.
